Obituary of Raymond Delaney

Raymond W. Delaney Leader in Service to Developmentally Disabled Raymond William Delaney died Thursday, May 10. He was 91. Mr. Delaney was born in Gowanda, NY, on August 25, 1915. He moved to Endicott as a child and remained here for most of his life. He was a graduate of Union-Endicott High School and completed 2 years as a Pre-Med student at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Mr. Delaney served as a Corpsman in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. After the war he worked for Predential Insurance Company until he was appointed Postmaster of the Town of Union in 1957, a position he held until his retirement. Mr. Delaney was a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. He was later elected President of the New York State Chapter of NAPUS. As a parent of a child with disabilities, Mr. Delaney became active in organizations dedicated to the welfare of the developmentally disabled. For 30 years he served that cause with distinction. He became a Charter member of the Board of Visitors of the Broome Developmental Disabilities Service Office (DDSO) in 1972, and served as its President for many years. He also served as Vice-Pesident for Developmental Centers in the New York State Association of Boards of Visitors and was recognized as Outstanding Board of Visitors member for 1990 by that organization. Among the other organizations for the disabled in which he served were the American Association for Retarded Adults and the Parents Group of the Broome DDSO. Mr. Delaney also contributed his services to other health-related institutions in the Triple Cities. He was a Charter member of the Board of Ideal Senior living Center, Endicott, NY and served on the Board of Wilson Regional Medical Center/United Health Services, Johnson City, NY. Mr. Delaney is survived by his wife, Janet Travis Delaney; children , Mary Delaney Krugman and Philip Lockwood Delaney; and grandchildren, Sean Dennis Delaney, Erin Delaney Guidici, Daniel Delaney Krugman, and Casey Winfield Krugman. Visiting hours for the family will be held Monday, May 14, from 4:00 8:00 p.m. at Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 300 East Main St., Endicott, NY. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, May 15, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 701 West Main St., Endicott, NY.
