She was born on January 1, 1919 in New York City, the daughter of Samuel and Beatrice Sacks. She attended Adelphi College in Garden City where she graduated with a degree in Social work. On February 16, 1941 she married Dr. Max Nirenberg, a dentist, from Stamford, Connecticut. They were married at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. During her life Shirley taught Sunday school and worked for many organizations in Stamford. Shirley enjoyed books, flowers, opera, and the theater. She loved people and the beauty in daily living. In the last four decades of her life, she lived in Florida, Texas, North Dakota and the southern tier of New York. In all these places, she was befriended for her warmth and humor. She is survived by a daughter, Leslie Billig, of Vestal, a son, David Nirenberg, of Myrtle Beach, SC; a sister, Eunice Weiss, of Glen Cove, NY; a son-in-law, Dr. Roger Billig of Vestal, a brother-in-law, Dr. Joseph Weiss of Glen Cove, NY and many nieces and nephews as well as grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband in 1988 and by a brother, Harvey Sacks in 1997. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. We would like to thank Dr. Sean Berkowitz and the entire staff of Rose and Daisy Courts for their compassionate and loving care.
