Obituary of Virginia Mary Rober

Vestal: Virginia Mary Meehan Rober, 91, passed away on Sunday morning, 23 November 2014 at her home in Vestal. She was born and grew up in Brooklyn, was in the first graduating class of Fontbonne Hall Academy in 1941, served three years in the W.A.V.E.S. during WW2, attended St. John's University in Brooklyn, married her great love Jack Rober in 1947, made eight grateful children with him, and raised them all by herself after FDNY LT John J. Rober died in the line of duty in 1959. When the children were old enough, Virginia went back to college, graduated from the College of Staten Island, served as librarian of St. Peter's Boys HS on Staten Island until retirement. She moved to Vestal, NY in 2004 to be near her family for the last 10 happy years of her life. Virginia was an avid reader of history and theology, and was always proud of her Irish heritage. She is survived by six of her eight children, Ginny, Susan and son-in-law Pankaj Saurastri, Richard and daughter-in-law Elena, William and daughter-in-law Patricia, Thomas and daughter-in-law Nel, and Jerry, and by six grandchildren. Her son, John and daughter, Linda pre-deceased her. Visitation will be at Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home at 765 Main St., Vestal from 4 to 7pm on Tuesday, 25 November. Requiem mass will be at 10am from Our Lady of Sorrows church, 801 Main St., Vestal, NY on Wednesday, 26 November, followed by burial at Vestal Park Cemetery. A memorial mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Counsel church on Staten Island at 7pm, Friday, 28 November.
