Burt Lyman

Obituary of Burt L. Lyman

Burt L. Lyman, 85, of Vestal, passed away in his home on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Burt was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Nancy Ann McNaney Lyman in 2003. He was also predeceased by his parents, Burton and Daisie (Carl) Lyman; his three brothers, Lewis, Francis and Ralph; and his four sisters Elsie, Hazel, Lena and Avis. Burt is survived, and will be greatly missed by, his son, Lawrence Lyman, Vestal; his daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Anthony Boysick, Spencer, NY; his daughter, Pamela (Humphrey) Lyman, Johnson City; his granddaughter and her husband, Eryn and Andrew Kilgallon, Johnson City; his grandson, Gavyn Humphrey, Binghamton; his great-grandchildren, Genavieve, Arianna and Andrew Joseph Kilgallon, all at home; his love and companion of the past several years, Sandra Kisloski, Apalachin; and several nieces, nephews, dear friends, and neighbors on Kimble Rd. Burt was born in Coudersport, Pa., on June 19, 1930. He grew up in Elmira, NY, and has spent the last 60 years of his life living in Vestal. Burt and his wife, Nancy, met at the age of 16, while attending Elmira South Side High School. They were married in April of 1949 and spent the next 54 years sharing a deep love for each other, for their three children and their grandchildren. Burt worked for LeValley McLeod, Inc., in Binghamton, as the regional operations manager until 1986. He then joined Tri-Bro Supply in Vestal as the General Manager. He worked at Tri-Bro until 1998, when Nancy began her battle with Alzheimer's disease. From that point on, Burt tirelessly and lovingly cared for Nancy, in their home, until she passed away in 2003. In 2005, Burt met Sandy Kisloski, who became his best friend and loving companion for his remaining years. Burt's children remember that, for most of Burt's life, no professional help was needed to be called in to fix anything that went wrong in their home. Burt was extremely handy and could fix it all. Burt was the true definition of a family man. He loved his family, his God, and his country. He had a kind and cheerful nature and was liked by everyone he came in contact with. Through the years, when his children would talk to someone about their dad (whether a clerk at a store, at the doctor's office, or nearly anywhere else), when the person found out their dad's name, they would almost always reply "Oh...I love Burt!". Burt was a member of the Vestal United Methodist Church, the "Has Beens" group of retired Shufflin' Shoes square dancers, an avid supporter of the Alzheimer's Association, and a former Band Aide for the Vestal High School Marching Band in the 1970's. Burt was very proud of the flower gardens he grew and maintained in his beautiful backyard. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful team at Lourdes Hospice, especially Cathy, for their loving care and support throughout Burt's final days. A memorial service for Burt will be held at Vestal United Methodist Church, 328 Main St., Vestal, NY on Saturday, June 18th, at 11 a.m. Friends are invited to call at the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, LLC, 765 Main St. Vestal, NY this Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., and at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday, until the time of service.
