I had the good fortune to coach Max one year in CYO hoops. It was a thrill for me— he was full of energy, had a great attitude and was supremely coachable. He would run through a brick wall for me. My most vivid memory is at the st Mary’s Rec center as I told him his assignment I noticed his eyes being open as wide as silver dollars right before I was about to sub him in— his youthful exuberance was invigorating. He would hit the boards, make steals, run the court on the fast break like his pants were on fire and never get tired. I have always cherished that season. He definitely had a divine spark in his soul.
