Obituary of John H. Irving
John Henry Irving, of Endicott, 90, went to be with his beloved wife and daughter on May 1st, 2025. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Sandralyn Irving, his daughter Kelly Ann Irving, and his parents Marion and Henry Irving. John is survived by his daughter Sheri Mayer, his two grandsons, Zachary and Colby Mayer, and his friends.
John graduated from Binghamton North Senior High School in 1953. John was a teacher at the Binghamton City School District where he taught Social Studies for 34 years and served as the Principal for Summer School for several years. Prior to that he taught at the Johnson City School District and the Bethlehem Central School District. John received his teaching degree and his master's degree from SUNY Oneonta and continued his education to receive his Certificate of Advanced Study in School Administration at SUNY Cortland.
John was a very proud veteran of the United States Army where he served two tours of duty at home and overseas. He was an instructor at the Air Defense Command School where he taught recruits to repair and maintain early warning air defense systems. He was also tasked with maintaining coder-decoders connecting a link between missile battery command and the firing battery for Air Defense Command Europe.
John was a loving and devoted husband and father. When his daughter, Kelly, passed away of an inoperable brain tumor at twelve years old, John, his wife Sandralyn, and his daughter Sheri, started the Kelly Swim Fund. This fundraiser raised $100,000 to fund Pediatric Brain Tumor Research which is still helping so many children to this day. His greatest joy was watching his two grandsons, Zachary and Colby, at all of their swim meets, concerts, and performances. He was beyond proud of the men that they have grown to become and all of their successes.
The family would like to thank the amazing friends who were always there for support, The Willow Point Nursing Home Rehabilitation Unit staff, The Guthrie Hospice staff for their compassion, and the private caregivers who showed so much kindness.
The funeral service will be held on May 16th, 2025 at 11:30am at Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home at 300 E Main St, Endicott, NY 13760. The family will receive visitors from 10:00-11:30am prior to the service. A military burial will immediately follow the funeral at Vestal Hills Memorial Park.
