Obituary of Irene M Melnyk

Irene M. Melnyk (September 28, 1938 to May 25, 2025) On Sunday May 25, 2025, Irene M. Melnyk entered into eternal rest surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Teofil and Angeline Herlica, immigrants from the former Czechoslovakia. Besides her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, George, and siblings Elizabeth Wickizer, Joseph Herlica, Francis Cutler, and Teofil Herlica. She is survived by her children Maryanne (John) Bednarski, Robert (Theresa), and Michael (Kelly), and her five grandchildren Michael and Matthew Bednarski, Parker Birtch, Andrew Mott and Emilie Melnyk. She also is survived by great-grandson Waylon Birtch, her sister Angie Wallace, and many nieces and nephews. Irene graduated from Union-Endicott High School in 1957. After graduating, she worked for Endicott Johnson Corporation in the mailroom and sang in the choir at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Endicott. Irene married her husband George in 1964 and settled in Endicott where she became a homemaker and doting mother to her three children. She loved sharing stories about her childhood and her Slovak heritage. Irene gave her children a love of music, and she would often sing four-part harmony with them. Irene loved to bowl, and her faith was a strong part of who she was. After her children left home, Irene worked alongside George in his numerous businesses. Taking care of her grandchildren also brought her great joy. Irene watched Parker and Andrew after school, and when Emilie was born, she was an influential part of her life, giving her the love of music, reading, and writing. Over the last 16 months of Irene's life, she had been cared for by the staff at Good Shepherd Fairview Homes in Binghamton, NY. Irene made many friends there, loved to play BINGO and participate in many activities. Irene was also the President of the Residence Council. She loved to spend time with others and enjoyed all that life had to offer there. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Good Shepherd for taking such good care of Irene. Irene's Celebration of Life will be held on June 7, 2025, at the Coleman Daniels Funeral Home in Endicott, NY. The viewing will be at 9 a.m. with the Celebration of Life starting at 10 a.m. Immediately following the service, Irene will be laid to rest with her husband at Vestal Hills Cemetery.
