October 17, 1945 – July 5, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas G. Tallman, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. At sunrise on July 5, 2025, Thomas was called home to the Lord, leaving behind the darkness of this world and entering the eternal light of God's presence at the age of 79. As the new day dawned, so did his eternal life. A devoted Navy veteran who proudly served in the Vietnam War, he died as a result of service-connected illnesses. His legacy of love, faith, and commitment to his country and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Thomas was born on October 17, 1945 in Binghamton, New York, the son of Charles and Jean Tallman. After the untimely death of his mother when he was just a young child, he was lovingly cared for by his aunt, Helen Armbruster. His aunt Helen became a nurturing figure in his life, providing him with the guidance and love he needed during those formative years. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Jean Tallman; his stepmother, Mary Tallman; his siblings, Carol Tallman, Gene Anthony Tallman, and Mary Joette Gerstner.
After graduating Maine-Endwell High School he voluntarily enlisted at the age of seventeen into the Navy where he served his last duty assignment on the USS Southerland during Vietnam. For his active service, he was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary and National Defense Service Medals. Following his honorable discharge, Tom and his brother attended barber school together, eventually becoming licensed barbers in Arizona. After returning to the Binghamton area, Tom furthered his education at Broome Community College before pursuing his entrepreneurial aspirations. Tom's dedication to his work was evident in his commitment to providing exceptional customer service. He consistently strived to meet the needs of his clients with care, attention, and integrity.
Above all, Thomas was a man of deep faith. A devout Catholic, he was an active member of the Syracuse Diocese. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his service to others and in his daily actions.
For 55 years, Thomas was married to his lifelong sweetheart, Elaine Truax Tallman, a union built on love, respect, and unwavering devotion. Together, they raised three children: Lori-Marie Sprague (Michael), Marianne Allen (Jeremiah), and Angela Tallman, the latter of whom he supported with profound love and dedication as a parent to a child with special needs. He was an extraordinary father, always present for his children and ready to lend a helping hand.
Thomas cherished his six grandchildren: Ashleigh Rose Allen, Abigail Grace Sprague, Tyler Michael Sprague, Madison Lynn Allen, Magavin Thomas Gerard Allen, and Padraig Jackson Allen. He took great pride in watching them grow and was a constant source of love, encouragement, and guidance.
Thomas was survived by his sister-in-law, Shirley Lockwood, and brother-in-law, Ralph Lockwood. He was also close to his dear cousins, especially his last surviving first cousin, Judy Flemming, with whom he shared a special bond. He was blessed to have lifelong friendships, including those with Mary Alimonti and Carleen Corey, who he regarded as a "little sister."
He was also a devoted uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, including Susan Clements (Gene), Patricia Crump (Gregg), Carol Harvey (Bob), David Gerstner (Maureen), Scott Lockwood (Kathy), Michael Tallman, and a loving great-uncle. His family meant everything to him, and he carried them quietly in his heart.
One of Tom's proudest achievements was the unwavering support he gave to his youngest daughter as she launched her own business, Gifted Sweets by Special Kneads, a pie business that held a special place in his heart. The business was created to empower his daughter, who has Down syndrome, reflecting Tom's faith in her potential.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Novak and the nephrology team at Sayre Guthrie, as well as to Dr. Satur. The family also extend their thanks to the Lourdes Hospice Caregivers and all the healthcare professionals who provided exceptional care during Thomas's many hospitalizations.
Thomas was a man of remarkable generosity, working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of others. He would give his last dollar to anyone and his home was always open to those in need. His selflessness knew no bounds.
A man who loved family gatherings and cherished time spent with loved ones, Thomas will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy will inspire those who carry on his memory.
A Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church in Binghamton on Friday, July 11th at 11:00am. The family will receive friends and family at St. Patrick's Church from 10 am-11am on Friday July 11, 2025. Live stream link is www.sta-sp.org. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Special Olympics or to a charity of your choice that supports veterans and their families.
