It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John (Jack) Vaughn Smith, who passed peacefully on September 4 at age 78, surrounded by love. He leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of strength, courage, and devotion.
Jack was born on October 15, 1946, in Binghamton, NY, to Isabella (Adams) and Earl T. Smith, Sr., and was one of five children. He grew up in Vestal and graduated from Vestal High School. He joined the Union Presbyterian Church in 1971, where he volunteered to teach scroll saw techniques to youth and with Habitat for Humanity.

Afterward, he joined American Legion Post 1700. Jack retired from the Vestal School District Transportation Department where he worked as a bus mechanic.
Jack was an avid outdoorsman and a true craftsman at heart. Known for his ability to fix anything, he was a skilled woodworker who could bring any idea to life. One of his proudest creations was a tiny play cabin that he built for his grandchildren, reflecting his creativity and love for family. He enjoyed working with stained glass, creating pieces for the church and his family. In addition to his many talents, Jack gave generously of his time, always ready to help his neighbors.
Jack's grandchildren were his greatest joy. He loved watching them play and treasured every moment together. His unwavering love created memories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Jack shared a special bond with his cats, Gabriel and Michael, whose companionship brought him comfort.
