Margaret Emma Weiland of Friendsville, PA passed away at the age of 94 on Monday December 15 at Riverview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a long life of teaching and travel.
She was born on the dairy farm where she grew up, the daughter of Jessie Lyon and Mabel (Clark) Lyon in Oxford, NY on June 27, 1931. Her life revolved around two things: Teaching and Travel. After elementary school in the 2-room schoolhouse where her mother taught she graduated from Oxford Academy and left to attend Buffalo State Teachers College earning her teaching degree before starting her first job at Sidney Central School.
In 1957 she married Harry J, Weiland of Endicott, NY who predeceased her in 2020. Moving to Vestal after marriage she was very proud to be in the first group of teachers to open the Willow Point Elementary school, staying until its closure then transferring to the Clayton Ave school until retiring in 1986.
Her other love of travel took her to all 7 continents even visiting the penguins in Antarctica. Cruises and camel rides, hiking the Great Wall and gazing at the Great Pyramid, she and her husband along with a close group of travel buddies led a great life.
She leaves one daughter - MaryAnn Weiland of Friendsville, PA along with several nieces and nephews spread from New York to Florida.
There will be no service. A celebration of life will be held in the Spring. Her ashes will be interred with her husband's at the Vestal Park Cemetery.
