Charles Walter Cheeseman, 87, of the Southern Tier of NY, passed away on February 21st at his daughter's home in Montrose, surrounded by family. Born September 12, 1938 in Binghamton, NY, Chuck spent most of his life in the Triple Cities area.
He was a gentle man of great faith who was loved by his family and community. He was an active member of Tracy Creek Memorial Church and his faith in Christ was incredibly important to him. Always willing to listen and share his wisdom, Poppy led by example and remained a humble servant to the end. To quote one of his grandsons, "If I can amount to a quarter of the man he was, I will have far exceeded my own expectations."
He was a proud veteran and loved sharing stories of his time in the Navy. He had multiple careers over the years and always believed in doing every job to its fullest, no matter what it was. He started off as a machinist and earned a degree in production and inventory control. He worked as a manager at Ozalid, then Gold Medal Ladder in Newark Valley and later Werner Ladder in Greenville, PA and Kentucky. Returning to the Southern Tier, he worked for MatCo in Great Bend, PA. After he "retired" he drove school bus for the Vestal Central School District for over 15 years, often working for the district as a summer custodian and in their cafeterias.
Whether working as a bowling alley pin-setter, ballroom dance instructor, record shop owner, manager, custodian, cafeteria worker or bus driver, he worked hard and always provided for his family. Whether taking drum lessons with his son or coaching his younger daughters in soccer, he supported his children in all of their endeavors and prioritized family. He was always quick to lend a helping hand and enjoyed taking care of the lawn. He loved being a grandfather and great grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia Cheeseman of over 50 years, his sister Linda Wells (Gene), his children Charles Cheeseman Jr. (Wendy), Debra Sickler, and Amy Powers (Eric) and his grandchildren Jeffrey Cheeseman (Nikki), Timothy Cheeseman (Gina), Jessica Marques (Rafael), Joseph Bowers, Nicole Crittenden (Seth), Holly Severino (Joseph), Daniel Powers, Ethan Powers, Ani Cheeseman, and several great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his parents Herbert and Ruth Cheeseman, as well as his daughter Kelly Cheeseman and brother Ronald Cheeseman.
Visitation will be on Saturday March 7th from 10-11 with a service to follow at 11 at Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home in Vestal, NY.
