Chase Donald Edward Purtell Obituary

In Loving Memory of Chase Donald Edward Purtell

August 6, 2002 – March 28, 2026

Chase Donald Edward Purtell, born August 6, 2002, in Jacksonville, Florida, passed away suddenly on March 28, 2026.

Though his life was far too short, Chase filled it with moments of joy, laughter, and love that will never be forgotten.

Chase had a passion for riding dirt bikes, a love that began at the age of 4 with his first four-wheeler. He proudly raced for several years with WNYOA/NYOA and GNCC, and found joy in the thrill of being outdoors and the freedom it gave him. He loved spending time with his friends and was always trying to make people laugh, bringing lightness and humor to those around him.

He had a beautiful smile, with dimples that so many will remember. He loved his older sister, Madison, who was also his best friend growing up, deeply, adored his Papaw, and cherished time spent in Illinois each summer—especially hanging out in the pool. He also shared a special bond with his Grandpa, who taught him to play a mean game of pitch.

Chase also had a deep appreciation for music of all kinds, enjoyed reading, and felt most at peace when he was outside. These simple but meaningful things were a big part of who he was.

Chase faced many challenges in his life, including mental illness that began in his late teens. Despite these struggles, he remained deeply loved by his family and friends. His life reflected both resilience and the quiet strength it took to carry what he did.

Family

Chase is survived by his loving parents, Leo and Sandra Purtell, who were always his safe place right to the end; his sister, Madison Weiler (Logan Weiler); his nephew, Leo Weiler; his nieces, Hollyn and Marnie Weiler; his grandmother, Norene; and his step-grandmother, Nur.

He is also survived by his aunts and uncles: David Grooms (Laura), Ellen (Mark Lewandowski), Janet O'Connell, Arlene (Neil Kern), Frank Purtell (Jeanne), and Peter Purtell (Trina), as well as many cousins and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Donald Purtell of Little Meadows, Pennsylvania; his grandparents, Edward and Ineetha Grooms of Illinois; and his uncle, Martin Purtell.

Friends

Chase had some great friends who were part of his life from preschool and grade school—Thomas, Dominic, and Kaden—and into high school, including Dom, Dalton, Josie, Riley, and several others.

Good friends are hard to find; great friends last a lifetime—and they did. Thank you for loving our son. He loved all of you.

Chase will be remembered not for the struggles he faced, but for his spirit, his humor, and the moments of connection he shared with others. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation hours will take place Saturday, April 11th, 2026 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM with a memorial service to follow. Both will be held at Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, Apalachin, NY.

In lieu of flowers, please consider sending living plants so that Chase's memory will continue to grow, or donations to NAMI – National Alliance of Mental Illness.

Forever 23, ride free. Always in our hearts. We love you, Chase, always and forever.

Love, Mom, Dad, and Sissy
