Eugene A Wagner Obituary
Eugene Arthur Wagner
3/10/1941-5/18/2026
Vestal, New York
Eugene Arthur Wagner, 85, of Vestal, passed away unexpectedly on May 18, 2026. A lifelong resident of Vestal and a true pillar of the community, Gene was known for his outgoing personality, unwavering dedication to his town, and the genuine friendships he built with countless people throughout his life. He never met a stranger and was deeply loved and respected by all who knew him.
Born on March 10, 1941, Gene graduated from Vestal High School in 1959 before proudly serving his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed at Fort Ord, California, for four years.
Gene dedicated much of his professional life to working as an inspector technician at IBM Endicott until his retirement in 1992. Even in retirement, he remained active and involved in the community he loved so dearly, serving as a crossing guard for African Road Elementary School until last year, and also as a videographer for Vestal High School, capturing countless local sporting events over the years. His dedication to the Vestal Volunteer Fire Department never wavered, and even into his mid-80s he continued to respond to fire calls whenever he was able, remaining actively engaged in service to his community until his passing.
Service to others was the defining theme of Gene's life. He faithfully served as a volunteer firefighter for more than six decades with the Vestal Volunteer Fire Department Company 1, and was also an active member of the Vestal Fire Police. He was also a devoted parishioner and usher at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Vestal, where his presence and kindness touched many lives.
Gene was a passionate supporter of Vestal athletics and community events. He loved bowling and, in later years, especially enjoyed cheering on his nephew Jim and his great nephew Steve at their bowling matches. He also enjoyed videotaping local events and staying involved in anything happening around town. He especially looked forward to his daily lunches at Pete's Legacy, where he enjoyed the familiar faces and sense of community. Whether at a football game, a fire department function, or simply talking with neighbors, Gene was happiest when surrounded by his community.
Gene was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Lovina "Dixie" Wagner, his parents, Josephine and Charles Wagner; his brothers, Donald Wagner and Charles Wagner; and his sister, Marion Hess.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Michelle Wagner; his cherished grandchildren, Noah, Aiden, Jonah, and Tela Valint; his nephew James Wagner and wife Donna; his niece Sharon Martin and husband Nova; his nephew, David Hess and his wife Bea; his niece Lori Reynolds; his brother-in-law, Terry Tozer and wife Mary Anne; as well as several additional nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends. Services will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Vestal. Calling hours will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed immediately by a Catholic Mass at 10:30 a.m. A luncheon for family and close friends will be held following the Mass.
A life of service well-lived; may he hear the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gene's name can be made out to the Vestal Volunteer Fire Department.
