Obituary of Alphina M. Eels

On July 21. 2023, Alphina was gently lifted by the angels, to begin the journey to her eternal home in Heaven, with Jesus. There, to greet her, were her loving parents, Frank and Ursula Slavetsky, and also, with abundant joy, her beloved son, Patrick (who had to leave her far too early in life). Effie was also united with her brother Frank Slavetsky, her sisters, Albina Chechatka, and Molly Gordon, as well as her aunts, uncles and cousins, with whom she shared her Lithuanian heritage. Effie was born in Binghamton, NY on November 14, 1926. Although she traveled often to other places in and out of the country in her early adult years, Binghamton was always "home". The heartwarming stories she often told to family and friends, most especially related to her Lithuanian upbringing, will never be forgotten! Effie always shared her endless love, kindness and compassion with all her family and friends. She was an incredibly strong-willed woman, who knew what she wanted in her life and was not afraid to go after it. She was instilled with abounding energy, and utilized it to the fullest. Effie 'touched' the lives of everyone she met, in such a positive unique and memorable way! She 'treasured' her family and always made them her number one priority in life. Her departure has left quite a void in all our lives, but the sweet and joyful memories she left behind, will live in our hearts and minds forever. Effie is survived by her devoted daughter-in-law Amata, along with her husband Glenn (whom she fondly called her "son-in-law"). She remained an integral part of their loving family. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Timothy Eels (Jennifer), Joseph Eels-Miller (Katie), Peter Eels-Miller (Sara) and her great grandchildren, Michael, Caroline and Matthew, whom she absolutely adored! Effie is also survived by her nieces, nephews, and dear friends Betty Canastaro (her apt. neighbor for 40 years) and also Peggy Evans, her wonderful, loving roommate at Willow Point Nursing Home. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff and caretakers at Willow Point Nursing Home for their incredible care, affection and compassion towards Effie throughout her 2 year stay with them. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 4, 2023 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church on Main Street in Endicott, NY, until her Mass of Christian Burial, which will take place there at noon. Her burial services will be held immediately following the Mass at Calvary Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her parents and her son, Patrick. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Effie's favorite charity, St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Online donations can be made in her memory, on their website.
