Obituary of William F. Oliver

Oliver, William F. Vestal: Bill Oliver, 87, of Vestal, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on June 23, 2012. Bill was born February 27, 1925 in Mayfield, PA to Mary and Francis Oliver. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Stasia Ann; his sons and daughters-in-law, Frank & Diana Oliver of Wyndom, PA and Bill & Mary Oliver of Vestal, NY. He is also survived by his grandchildren and their spouses, Michelle (Oliver) & Lee Betkowski, Waxhaw, NC, AnnMarie (Oliver) & Pete Sullivan, Raleigh, NC, Stacie (Oliver) & Joe Leska, Clifton Park, NY, Bill & Emily Oliver, Lockport, NY, Marcie (Oliver) & Ken Buno, Valatie, NY, and his granddaughter whom he and Stasia raised from age 3, Krista (DeMase) & Rob Mclntosh, Vestal, NY. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and his daughter, Mary Ellen DeMase. Bill retired as the Supervisor of Transportation for the Vestal Central School District in 1987 where he worked for over 24 years. He sang in the choir at Our Lady of Sorrows Church for over 50 years. He is a veteran of WWII, where he drove a tank in the Third Armored Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer from the Army Reserves after 44 years of service. He was a past commander of the VFW Post 8808, and a member of the Military Officers of America. Bill was an active member of the Vestal Volunteer Fire Department for 57 years and was the Department Chief from 1969-1971, and was Assistant Chief from 1963-1968 and 1972-1976. He always very quietly led by example and was very humbled and proud to be able to serve his country and community. His love for his family and friends will always be cherished by all. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows, 157 Clark St., Vestal. Graveside Services with Military Honors will follow at Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 765 Main St., Vestal. Those wishing may make contributions to the Building Fund of Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
