Obituary of Edward J. Gormley

Edward J. Gormley 1/27/37 - 2/11/09 of Endicott Edward J. "Ed" Gormley, 72, of Endicott, N.Y. passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness, on February 11, 2009, with his loving wife Joanne at his side. Ed was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on January 27, 1937, the son of the late Edward J. Gormley Sr. and Muriel Grace (Keppler) Gormley. After moving to upstate N.Y. with his parents in 1948, Ed graduated from Dryden High School in 1955, and Mohawk Valley Technical Institute in 1957. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Elmira College in 1974. Ed was a longtime employee of IBM Owego, holding several key positions and retiring with 36 years of service. He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club. Ed finished his career with the Loral Corporation in 1995. In retirement, Ed was the Board President for the Phase 20 Property Owners Association at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach, Delaware, and served as a consultant for the Watson School of Engineering at Binghamton University. Ed was an avid golfer and enjoyed his time on the fairways with his dear friends, Walt Gasior and Jack Warden. He loved to read and had a passion for his sports car. He treasured his family, particularly his grandchildren, who held a special spot in his heart. Ed is survived by his wife of 31 years, Joanne E. (Moore) Gormley, Endicott; his children, Steven M. Gormley and his wife Laurie, Hoosick Falls N.Y., Christopher E. Gormley, Baldwinsville N.Y., Jennifer A. Schrantz and her husband Tim, Fredonia N.Y., Lauri A. Webster and her husband Karl Pastore, Milton Mass., and Amy L. Murphy and her husband Dave, Jacksonville Fla.; and his grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Gormley, Hoosick Falls, Jena, Nathan and Samuel Schrantz, Fredonia, Luke Pastore, Milton, Mass., and Taylor, Allison, Reid, and Meghan Murphy, Jacksonville, Fla.. His former wife, Margaret H. DeGraff also survives him. In addition to his parents, his sister, Carol Ann Gormley, and his in-laws, Lester and Anna (Goodnough) Moore, also predeceased Ed. Father Edward Zandy will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, February 16, 2009, at 10 a.m. from Our Lady of Good Counsel, 200 Grippen Avenue, Endicott, N.Y. The family will receive friends at Coleman-Daniels Funeral Home, 300 E. Main Street, Endicott, N.Y. on Sunday, February 15, 2009, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden, N.Y. at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, N.Y., in memory of Edward J. Gormley.
