Obituary of George Cunning

George W. Cunning Of Vestal George W. Cunning, of Vestal, passed away July 12, 2007 at the age of 87 at Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was the husband of Patricia B. Cunning. They were married for 56 years. One of nine children of the late Robert and Louisa Hoskins Cunning, he was born in Binghamton and raised in West Endicott. He was a graduate of the Union-Endicott High School and served in the Army Air Force during WWII, being stationed in New Guinea. Returning from the war, he found employment with GAF, where he remained until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Vestal United Methodist Church. He enjoyed travel, especially revisiting Colorado and western United States, where he had traveled while in the service, as well as Florida, and the Canadian Rockies and Belgium, in order to visit the gravesite of his brother, Nelson, who had been killed in the Battle of the Bulge. His last trip was to Washington, D.C. in August of 2006, to show his family the WWII Memorial, the dedication of which he had attended the previous year. He also took great pleasure in working in the yard and watching baseball, especially the Mets. By far the most important thing to him however, was his family. His dedication to his family was unsurpassed. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and James Spano, Endicott, daughter, Judith, Vestal, son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Diane Cunning, Greece, NY; grandchildren, Katharine Spano, Johnson City, Allison and Miles Cumming, Greece, NY. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Smithgall, Wilmington, NC; brother and sister-in-law, H. Kenneth and Jean Cunning, Cedar Park, TX; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank his physicians, Dr. Kevin Gallagher and Associate, Dr. Christine Fenlon, and especially Dr. Ali Marhaba, as well as the staff of ST5 at Wilson for their excellent care and kindness toward George and us as well. The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 765 Main St., Vestal. The Rev. John Goodell will officiate. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial park. The calling hours will be 7:00 9:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to either the Vestal united Methodist Church, 328 Main St., Vestal, or to the National World War II Museum, 945 Magazine St., New Orleans, LA 70130
