Obituary of Robert A. Grate

Robert A. Grate formerly of N.Y.C. Robert Alexander Grate, 81, of New York State, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2009, with his family at his side. Bob was predeceased by his wife of thirty-nine years, Harriette Ruth Gordon Grate; his brother, John C. Grate; their parents, Alexander and Margaret Grate. Bob is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary-Ann; his only grandchild, Justine Renee; foster son, Terrence J. Hardin; brother-in-law and his wife, Norman and Toby Gordon; seven nieces and nephews, Debbie Albig, Dianne Craig, Alan Grate, Jane Grate, Michele Grate, James Grate and Rose Grate; and ten grandnieces and nephews. Bob was a veteran of World War II and taught English to Japanese businessmen for most of his life. He also helped write the textbook "English Pronunciation Exercises for Japanese Students" with his wife. Bob was born in Rochester, met his one true love in Ithaca, raised a family in Riverdale and retired in Endicott. At Bob's request, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Justine Renee Grate College Fund, 311 East Main St. #7, Endicott, N.Y. 13760.
