Obituary of Janice A. McGlade

Janice A. McGladeof Apalachin, N.Y.7/31/1934 - 5/16/2008 Jan joined her Lord peacefully at Wilson Hospital after a long illness. Born in South Lansing, N.Y., the daughter of Jessie Jr. and Helen (Carlise) Jacobs, who predeceased her. She is survived by sisters, Julia Smith, Florida, Hazel Smith, Mich., Nancy Jacobs, Groton, N.Y., Martha Peck, Locke, N.Y.; and her brothers, Marvin Jacobs, Locke, N.Y., and Herbert Jacobs, McLain, N.Y.; also many friends. Jan was married on September 20, 1953, to William McGlade in Groton, N.Y. Jan graduated from Marathon High School and in 1951 attended BCC. She worked as a secretary for Dunn & McCarthy Shoe Manufacturing in Binghamton, N.Y., and later owned Jan's Department Store in Apalachin for 14 years. Jan was active in Apalachin all her life. She was a past president of the Apalachin Jaycees, past president and one of the founders of the Apalachin Library, and past president of the Apalachin Garden Club. She was also vice chair at her church, Apalachin United Methodist Church, and head of the church kitchen for many years. Jan was honored as a Grand Marshall at the Fireman Field Days Parade in 2007 for her work on the Apalachin Library. Jan is survived by her husband, William; her daughter, Kathleen A. Christofaro and her husband, Steve, Pine City, N.Y.; her daughter, Karen McGlade, Endicott; and her two grandchildren, Paul and Elizabeth Christofaro. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the United Methodist Church of Apalachin. The fund will be used for "Jan's Elmira Kids". The memorial service will be held at the Apalachin United Methodist Church at the above address on Saturday, May 24, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be family only at the convenience of the family in the Marathon Cemetery.
