Obituary of Gerald E Grant

Gerald (Jerry) E. Grant of Apalachin Gerald (Jerry) E. Grant, age 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on July 21, 2008. He was born on April 24, 1920 in Sayre, Pa. to the late Myron Grant and Anna (Duhlstine) Grant. He is predeceased by four brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alethea Tuttle; and his brother, Howard. Also surviving are sons, Gerald M., Robert (Debi), and Craig; daughters, Denise (Michael Bashta) and Lisa Sampson; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. In order to help his parents during the Great Depression, Jerry left school to join the Civilian Conservation Corp. He served in WWII with the 7th Army, 838th Anti Aircraft Battalion, A Company, Battery 6, in France, Austria and Germany. His unit provided artillery support for the Rhine River crossing and the liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp. In 1990 he arranged the first reunion of his fellow soldiers and their spouses, held in Binghamton. Jerry was a retired IBM Security Employee with 29 years of service. Always a man with a zest for life, he taught his family to face each day with courage and humor. The family wishes to offer sincere thanks to the staff of Lourdes Hospice Program for their care and support for both Jerry and his family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research Church Street Station, P.O. Box 780, New York, N.Y. 10008-0780. The family will receive friends at Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 300 E. Main St., Endicott, N.Y., on Thursday, July 24th, from 5-7 p.m. and on Friday, July 25th, at 12:30 p.m., prior to the 1 p.m. funeral service.
