Obituary of Dorothy P. Carter
Dorothy Carter of Vestal, NY
With her loving children by her side, Dorothy Louise Carter (Dottie), age 93, passed from this life into a life of eternal joy and celebration with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 20, 2015.
She was born August 3, 1921 in Scotland County, N.C., the daughter of Hugh and Mary Ellen Peele. Orphaned by the age of 4, she was raised by her uncle and aunt Donald and Matilda Pearson, near Raeford, NC.
She met her husband Thomas at a USO dance at Ft Bragg, NC during WWII. They were married May 5, 1946 in NC. Tom then brought his bride back to his home in Binghamton, NY where they started a family. They moved to Vestal, NY in 1958. Tom passed away in 1991. Dottie was also predeceased by her sisters Nellie Warwick and Alma Walters, sisters-in-law Alice Abbott and Camilla (Jack) Grimm, and two dear cousins, Kate Currie and Edwin Hasty.
She is survived by her three children: Janice (Frank) Miller, Endwell, NY; June Carter, San Diego, CA; Donald (Patti) Carter, Vestal, NY; eight grandchildren: Curt Miller (Kelly San Filippo), Christie (Paul) Sasso, Courtney Carter, Michaela Carter, Oriana Hewa, Regina (Jeff) Sitterley, Audrey (Will) Jacobson, Thomas Carter; and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her special nieces and nephews: Barbara Abbott, Judy (Allen) Grow, and Susan (Denny) Grotrian, Horace (Helen) Warwick, John Hugh Warwick, and Bud Walters.
Dottie was a gifted poet. Her favorite subject was her love of her Lord Jesus, but she also loved to honor her family and friends with her poetry. She also loved to journal - putting in writing her thoughts about her life experiences.
She travelled the world with her daughters. She visited 13 countries and once circled the globe, visiting faraway places like Thailand and Vietnam.
The most important thing in Dottie's life was her love of Jesus. She lived a joyful, Spirit-filled life.She was clothed in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. All who met her for even a moment were touched by her love and grace.
Dottie's family wishes to express our gratitude for the excellent and loving care she received at Woodland Manor in Vestal, where she lived for the past 6 years. We also extend our gratitude to the staff of 2B at Bridgewater Nursing Home in Binghamton.
A service of remembrance and celebration will be held at Memorial Park Baptist Church, 1013 Front St., Vestal, NY 13850 at 11:00 am, Tuesday May 26 2015. Pastor Marlene Steenburg officiating, calling hours will be at the Church, from 9:30 am until the time of the service. She will be laid to rest at Vestal Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Memorial Park Baptist Church, where Dottie was a member for over 45 years.
