Obituary of Sarah Irene Wells
Sarah "Sally" Irene (Shimer) Wells, of Endicott, gained her heavenly wings on the morning of her 94th birthday, April 2. She asked us many times why she couldn't just be done, and go to heaven, but Jesus' gift was a remarkable plan for her to celebrate her birthday both here and with Him and her loved ones who went ahead of her. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Richard Wells; Parents: William J.B. Shimer & Lovica M. Shimer of Birchardville, PA; Siblings: Homer Shimer of Montrose, PA, Doris Nesmith of Toms River, NJ, Floyd Shimer of Birchardville, PA & Gaston, SC, Glenn Shimer of Birchardville, PA, and Gretta Bennett of DeFuniak Springs, FLA. Sarah is survived by her daughter, Brenda M. Truex of Binghamton, NY; Grandchildren: D. Phillip Truex of Tucker, GA and Sarah J. Truex of Burlington, VT; Sister-in-Law F. Louise Kane of St. Petersburg, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Sarah was born in 1923 in Birchardville, PA, where she grew up on a farm. There she learned to cook on a woodstove, heat an iron on that same woodstove, pump water from a well, saw wood, gather eggs and help with the cattle (by running away). The lessons gathered there of the value of hard work, independence, and integrity, that served her well in her adult life. Her family remembers her as a bright, tenacious, and brutally (yet sometimes comically) honest woman with a soft side that glowed through it all. Her sense of humor stayed with her to the end, flashing her blue eyes and delivering a line that no one could resist a belly laugh at. She was a long-time member of Central United Methodist Church in Endicott, NY. Her life and work was guided by her dedication to her Lord and Savior. At the request of the deceased, there will be no formal calling hours or funeral. Instead, a meal and celebration of her life will be held at Central Methodist Church, 17 Nanticoke Ave. Endicott, NY, on Saturday April 8 at 6PM in their dining hall. Please wear her favorite color, purple, and bring a favorite "Sally" story to write down to share with her family. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name to the charity of your choice are encouraged.
