Obituary of Alice C. DeMann

Alice (Hawkins) DeMann, 86, of Apalachin, N.Y. passed away on Aug. 19, 2017, following an extended illness. Alice is survived by her two daughters, Karen (Terry) Edsall of Ocala, Fla. and JoAnn (Perry) Walter of Warren Township, Pa., her granddaughters, Karalyn and Kimberly Walter, sister, Lavanne Vinson of Apalachin, brother Gene (Jacqueline) Hawkins of Owego, and brother Edward Hawkins of Apalachin, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband George DeMann, an infant daughter, an infant grandson, Ian Walter, her parents, Earl and Maude (Bell) Hawkins, brothers, Earl Hawkins, Jr. and Harry Hawkins, and sisters Betty Brown, Sandra Wright, Juanita Youells, Cecelia Lockwood and Linda Hawkins. A lifelong Apalachin resident, Alice worked at Endicott-Johnson Corp. before her marriage to George in 1950. She was a long time member of the AFD Auxiliary and often volunteered in the auxiliary booth and helped prepare food at the Firemen's Field Days. Alice had a creative knack for sewing and a passion for the art of crocheting; she crocheted more than 600 lap blankets in the eleven years she was a member of the southern tier group, the Caring Quilters, which donates hand-made items to nursing homes, veterans and others. The family wishes to thank students and teachers at Broome-Tioga BOCES in Apalachin for their friendship and community service. "Miss Alice" enjoyed when the students came to visit, and was delighted with the flower garden they started for her. The family will receive friends on Saturday, Aug. 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home in Apalachin. A graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery-Apalachin on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Alice's memory to the Caring Quilters; checks should be made out to Marilyn Truex and mailed to 1229 Farm to Market Rd., Endwell, NY 13760.
