Alexander E. McDonell formerly of Endwell Alexander Edwin McDonell, age 96 years, died Sunday, November 8, 2009, at 9 a.m. at Community Nursing and Rehabilitation in Indianapolis, IN. The son of Edwin Wallace McDonell and Carrie Bell (Caroline) Jones, he was born in Covington, KY and was a longtime resident of Endwell, NY and Mariemont, OH. He was a member of the 5th Street Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church, Covington, KY, First Christian Disciples of Christ Church in Endicott, NY, the Northminister Presbyterian Church in Endwell, the Hyde Park Baptist Church in Hyde Park, OH, the Madiera Presbyterian Church in Madiera, OH, and the Mariemont Community Church in Mariemont, OH. He worked as a chemist for the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company from 1937 until 1965 and as a research associate at the Tanner's Council Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati from 1965 until his retirement. He was a 50-year member of the American Leather Chemist Association. During WWII, he joined the Signal Corps Radar Laboratory in 1942 and entered armed service in the Army Air Force in 1943, serving as a radar mechanic in Italy until the end of the war, when he returned in 1945 to Endicott-Johnson. He leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl (McDonell) and Joseph Benedetti, Endicott; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Clayton K. Lowe, Columbus, OH, Neil E. McDonell and Margaret Moline, White Plains, NY, and Edwin D. McDonell of Indianapolis, IN; eight grandchildren, Adam McDonell Moline and Aaron McDonell Moline, Lynn (Benedetti) Moore and David Benedetti, Scott Lowe, Kim Parker, Shelley Sobel and David Lowe; as well as great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A Funeral Service for Alex will be held on Monday, November 16, 2009, at 12 p.m. at the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, Inc., 300 E. Main St., Endicott. Burial will be in the Riverhurst Memorial Cemetery, Endicott, NY, where his wife, Loretta Arlene (Terry) McDonell, is buried. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 11 a.m. until service time at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association , Central New York Chapter, 441 West Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204-1305 or to the charity of one's choice.
