Obituary of James Adams Shurtleff

James Adams Shurtleff (Jim), beloved husband of Marilyn L. Shurtleff, passed away on Thursday, March 16th at 87 years old after a brief illness. He was surrounded by family over his last days. Jim was born on August 7, 1935 in Binghamton, NY to Samuel Arthur Shurtleff and Helen Dorothy Collar. He is survived by his wife Marilyn; brothers, Roy and Michael; sons, Scott and Jeffrey; stepsister Ruth Pearsall; and grandchildren, Valerie and Clark. Jim graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He enjoyed long careers at GAF in Binghamton and IBM in Endicott. He obtained his Professional Engineer certificate through Syracuse University. Jim showed a deep love of family from his home in Endwell, where he lived for over 55 years. He and Marilyn enjoyed hosting many family dinners and holiday gatherings in their loving home and deck. He was a beloved, longtime member of Union Presbyterian Church, serving on many committees over the years. He was a dedicated volunteer to the Professional Engineers Society and received Engineer of the Year Awards in 1992 and 2008. Jim and Marilyn enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends across the country, particularly to the Outer Banks, Indiana and the southwest states. He was an avid photographer, providing many memories of a life of compassion, joy, and love. A memorial service will be held at Union Presbyterian Church starting at 4 pm, Sunday, March 19th followed by a brief reception.
