Obituary of Andrew F. Hickey

It is with deep sadness that the family of Andrew Frederick Hickey announces his passing on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. His battle with glioblastoma lasted two and a half years, during which he fought bravely, keeping up an active and productive life. He spent the final month of his life in peace and comfort at the Mercy House of the Southern Tier. Andrew was born on April 19, 1967, the son of Joan Williamson Hickey and Robert Hickey of Owego. He was a graduate of Owego Free Academy, Alfred State College, from which he received a degree in accounting, and a 1990 graduate of SUNY Oswego, from which he earned his BA in Accounting and Economics. A NYS Certified Public Accountant, he was a member of the Society of NYS Certified Public Accountants. He began his career as an accountant for Piaker & Lyons (Rochester, NY) and served the people of the State of New York and the Department of State for 26 years. He was a Tax Auditor 1 in the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, a Senior Examiner for Municipal Affairs in the NYS Office of the State Comptroller and in recent years, Senior Accountant for the NYS Department of State for the Division of Cemeteries. Andrew was preceded in death by his father, Robert Hickey, brother Ryan Hickey, uncles Lee Williamson of Lafayette, LA, Paul Williamson of Rhode Island and their wives, Joyce Williamson and Callie Williamson, Aunt Janice Williamson of Port Orchard, WA., and his father-in-law, Dr. Lawrence Kiley of Endwell. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 12 years, Johanna Kiley Hickey of Endicott and the lights of his life, daughter Iris Ann Hickey and son William Ryan Hickey. He is also survived by his mother Joan W. Hickey of Owego, his mother-in-law, Nancy F. Kiley of Endwell, brother Erin O'Conner (Nalia) and their children Ashlynn, Talan, and Brynn of Endicott, brother Patrick Hickey (Karin Dahlander) and their children Willa, Emmitt, August and Winter of Berkshire, NY, uncle Commander Mark Williamson of Port Orchard, WA, sister-in-law Lauren Kiley Saleeby (Michael) of Vestal, and their children Katherine and Grace, to whom he was a loving God Father. He is also survived by many cousins and dear friends. Andrew was a member for many years of the Binghamton Tennis Center, where he and Johanna met. It was a "love match." He was also an avid outdoorsman, and bird enthusiast. He enjoyed mountain biking and racing with his close friend, Ed DeSantis. A loving and devoted dad, he became a No. 1 Dance Dad, basketball dad, lacrosse dad, Ninja dad and recent enthusiastic subscriber to his son's YouTube channel, Willy Dude. Though weakened by his illness, he managed to smile and give a thumbs up to the news that Will was starting karate lessons. We know he's watching from Heaven and participating with his children in each of their endeavors. Andrew's favorite times were spent hiking in Apalachin and working the land there, building bonfires with family and friends, as well as BBQing and partying with loved ones around the pool. He always enjoyed spending time in Schenevus, NY with his close friends from high school and college days, Rob Damers and Scott Inscho. The family wishes to thank those who cared for Andrew, most especially Dr. Sethi, Dr. Harris and Dr. Haq, Guthrie Hospice, and the very caring staff at Mercy House. Calling hours for Andrew will be at Coleman-Daniels Funeral Home in Endicott from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 9. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10 at All Saints Episcopal Church, Johnson City, NY with the Reverends Dawn Victoria Mitchell, rector, and John Martinichio, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Endicott officiating. Interment at Riverhurst Cemetery will follow the service. Donations in memory of Andrew may be sent to Mercy House of the Southern Tier and the StasheStrong organization for glioblastoma research.
