Obituary of James L Jackson

James Lewis Jackson Of Vestal James Lewis Jackson, age 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family members on Saturday, August 21, 2010. Jim was born on January 1, 1926 in Endicott, New York. Jim is survived by Barbara Stoughton Jackson, loving wife of 61 years. His parents were Cecil and Genevieve Jackson, predeceased, as are sisters Alice and Lillian. He is survived by siblings Russell, Carol, and Roger, sons, Ronald and wife Pat, Robert and significant other Denise, grandchildren Bryan, Aaron and fiancé Emily, and step grandchildren Michel and wife Cindy, Gary and fiancé Lisa, David, Julie and husband Michel. Jim graduated in 1944 from Newark Valley's Central High School, where he was a notable varsity basketball player. He enlisted in the Marine Corps directly after high school, serving in the Pacific theater. He received a Purple Heart for wounds received in the battle for Okinawa in 1945, and after spending more than a year in various naval hospitals, he was honorably discharged in 1946 at the rank of Corporal. He began working for the Endicott Trust Company in 1947, where he was employed for nearly 42 years and worked his way through the ranks to Executive Senior Vice President when he retired in 1989. He attended American Institute of Banking where he became certified to teach banking courses and he graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and the New York State Bankers Association Executive Development School at West Point. Jim contributed to a number of community and charitable organizations, including the Lions Club, Broome County Airport Board, United Way, and the Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to the Susquenango Council. He loved home and family above all else, but greatly enjoyed travel and genealogical research. Jim was a man of many talents and excelled in home improvement and remodeling. The family would like to express our sincere gratitude for the tender care provided to Jim during his final years by several loving caregivers, including grandson Aaron, Daniel Clark, Joann Taylor, David Fortenbaugh and the staff of Good Shepherd Village In Endwell. Friends and family may pay their respects on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m. at Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home at 765 Main Street, Vestal. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the same location.
