Obituary of George O. Lewis
George Olmstead Lewis Sr. (1923 - 2010)
George Olmstead Lewis, Sr. 9/12/23 -12/16/10 87, of Waverly, NY, formerly of Binghamton, passed peacefully from this world on Thursday, December 16, 2010. George was predeceased by Catherine Phillips Lewis; sons George O. Lewis, Jr. and Ernest McKane Lewis; parents Cecelia and Ernest Lewis; siblings Beverly, Phoebe, Cecelia, Ernestine, William, Frances, Twila, Doris, Caroline, Florance and Lillian. He is survived by daughters Catherine D. Eckert and Debra; and Bruce Pomeroy, grandchildren Heather and Leah Pomeroy, William and Jo Eckert, and Jessica and Jake Parr; and great grandchildren Catelyn and Deneese Eckert and Jaedyn Parr. Also surviving are siblings Dewey and Lucille, and many nieces and nephews and their families. Special thanks are extended to nephews, George (Quake) and Terry, and their families for their kindness over the past couple of years. George worked construction much of his life, including several years as a glass cutter. He later worked in maintenance at Ideal Hospital. George loved the beauty of nature and spent many years camping, hunting and fishing. He was an amazing cook, and enjoyed nurturing others. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and always treasured time with them. George also loved to sing and reminisced about family gatherings when he enjoyed harmonizing with his sisters. He would sit for hours playing the harmonica or ukulele. In his senior years, George was finally recognized, and received, a purple heart for his brave and loyal service in the U.S. Army during WWII. A special thank you goes to the staff at Elderwood Healthcare for their patience and loyal care to George. You became his extended family and created the secure environment he needed.
A memorial service led by Rev. Dr. Steven Johnson, will be held at Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home, 300 Main St., Endicott, NY on Tuesday, December 21.2010 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time. A military interment at Glenwood Cemetery will be held immediately following the service. Expressions of sympathy in memory of George and sons Ernie and George, Jr. may be made to Kennedy Krieger Foundation, ALD Research, 707 N. Broadway, Balltimore, Maryland 21205.
