Obituary of Doris Edwards

Doris M. Edwards Doris M. Edwards, 86, of Endicott passed away February 3, 2011 at her Endicott home where she was born and lived her entire life. She is predeceased by her parents Jasper Daniel Edwards and Olive Warner Light, her sisters Marion L, Florence L, and Ethel A, and her infant brother, Richard W. She is survived by numerous cousins and many loving friends. Doris was born on April 28, 1924. She graduated from Union-Endicott High School in 1942. A year later, in May 1943, she joined IBM and was a loyal employee for 41 years until her retirement in 1984. While working there, she was very active in many IBM activities. As a member of IBM's Quarter Century Club she served as Treasurer, Vice president, and then President. One of her biggest loves was traveling around the world and she was a long-time member of the IBM Travel Club where she also served as its President. Every December she proudly displayed her Christmas trees adorned with hundreds of tree ornaments, each from a different country she had visited. Of all her trips, her cottage on the St Lawrence River always remained her favorite. Doris was a lifetime member of the Union Presbyterian Church (UPC). She served as its Sunday School Superintendent, a church Elder, Trustee, Deacon, and President of the Ladies Aid Association. She also served as chair of many church committees. In 1975 she organized the UPC church museum to preserve and relate its long and interesting history. In 2007 the church dedicated, and named, the museum in her honor. In 2004 she worked tirelessly and was successful in placing the church-owned Riverside Cemetery on the prestigious National Register of Historic Places. Many of UPC's first members who are buried there had played a big part in the early history of the old Village of Union, the Town of Union, and Broome County. In 1988, because of her love of the local history where she grew up, she was instrumental in organizing the Old Village Of Union Historical Society where local history is preserved and promoted with historic museum displays and monthly programs. Doris was a member, past President, and Broome/Tioga District Deputy of Rebekah Carnation Lodge (women's chapter of IOOF). The organization will hold a short service at 4:30 PM during Monday's calling hours. She was also a member and Line Officer of the Round Hill Chapter 104 of the Order of the Eastern Star (women's chapter of the Masons). The organization will hold a short memorial service at 6:30 PM during Monday's calling hours. A very appreciative "thank you" goes out to Pat and Dee and their caregiver associates who provided such excellent care and assistance to Doris during these last nine months. Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, February 7 at Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home (300 East Main Street, Endicott). A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 8 at the Union Presbyterian Church located at 200 East Main Street, Endicott. In lieu of flowers Doris would like donations to be made to the Union Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 200 East Main Street, Endicott, NY 13760.
