Obituary of Marjorie L Rogers
Marjorie Rogers
Marjorie Lilian (Bull) Rogers, 94, of Apalachin, passed peacefully on January 16th, joining her husband George, daughter Pam, sister Dorothy and brother Ray. She was born in Locust Valley, New York, the daughter of Hubert and Lilian Bull. She grew up at Ferguson Castle in Huntington Bay, Long Island, where her father was a gardener, and from him she inherited her love of nature and her lifelong passion for gardening. In her youth she was a member of the Ray Sisters, a vaudeville dance duo with her sister, where Marjorie developed a style, strength, grace and beauty which she carried with her throughout her life. In her twenties, Marjorie worked as a secretary in the British Division at Grumman Aircraft where she met George Rogers, a handsome young British Royal Naval officer who would become her husband. With him she had four children: Suzanne, Christopher, Pamela and Victoria. She devoted her life to her family, and took great joy in celebrating graduations, marriages and birthdays first of her children, then of her eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Marjorie, too, was celebrated. She took particular joy in her 87th birthday, a milestone she was the first in her family to reach. We were all blessed that she was able to celebrate not only her 87th birthday, but seven more. She made the most of each of those years fulfilling her dreams of traveling. She saw Venice, the Coliseum in Rome, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and had tea in Kensington Gardens in London. She cruised throughout the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and to Puerto Rico. While these experiences delighted her, she was equally able to appreciate the beauty of, and take pleasure in, the simple things. She loved quiet afternoon drives to take in nature. Some of her favorite activities included: sitting on the swing in her front yard, watching the antics of resident birds, squirrels and chipmunks, wriggling her toes in the grass and enjoying the gentle warmth of the sun on her face. Underneath the surface of her sweet, refined, often reserved temperament was a woman with a unique wit and a great appreciation of good-natured mischievousness. She loved to laugh, often at the antics of her family. She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her, including her children: Suzanne Turner and husband Ken, Christopher Rogers, Victoria Sheppard and husband Hank; her eight grandchildren: Andrew and wife Susana, Erin and Kimberly Turner; Craig and wife Rachel, Brian and wife Eileen and Kevin Rogers; Kelly McCarthy; and Shaun McDougal; her three great-grandchildren: Sophia Turner (Andrew & Susana), Dylan Rogers (Craig & Rachel) and Liam Rogers (Brian & Eileen) as well as two more great grandchildren on the way: Sophia's little sister and Dylan's sibling. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 28th from 2-4 p.m. at Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home, Route 434, Apalachin, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marjorie's name may be made by check to the Apalachin Fire Department, 230 Pennsylvania Avenue, Apalachin, NY 13732, or by check or online payment to: Lourdes Hospice, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, NY 13905. www.lourdes.com/about-us/foundation/donate.
