Mary E. Haggerty
Maine, NY: Mary E. Haggerty, 57, of Maine died Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center. She was predeceased by her brother, Bill. She is survived by her mother, Edith Thornton; father, Edward Haggerty; her identical twin sister, Marlene (Dan) Vymislicky; sister, Denise (Bob) Broughton; her companion of 31 years, Sharon Magill; her daughter, Heather (Douglas) MacQueen; and grandsons, Daniel and Nicholas; nephews, Dan and Brigette, Joe and Tina, Tom and Dorrie; several aunts, uncles, and cousins, including her special aunt Evie; also her dog, Mack. Mary graduated from Empire State College in 1985 with a B.P.S. in human services. She worked as a counselor for Catholic Charities and the Drug Awareness Center of Broome County. After her recovery from a severe automobile accident in which she was blinded and head injured, she worked as a peer counselor for Southern Tier Independence Center until 1997. Mary loved playing guitar, listening to music, and visiting with her family and friends. Mary was a strong courageous woman who touched many lives. The family would like to thank Wilson Hospital CCU for their care and compassion for Mary.
A Funeral Mass will be offered Wednesday at 11 a.m. from Most Holy Rosary Church, Maine. Burial will be in Maine Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home, 300 East Main St., Endicott, Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Rd., Yorktown Heights, NY 10598.
