Obituary of William Lampman

William K. Lampman William K. Lampman died on January 9, 2013. Binghamton born and bred, he played football and basketball at North High School, graduating into a war torn world in June of 1941. After a year at Hamilton College, he began a stint the Army cut short by an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in the Class of 1947/46. A math whiz, Dad demonstrated his mastery of that subject by leaving his final math exam his senior year over a half an hour early, turning in a paper awarded the top grade of 4.0. A more important activity, a date with his fiance, competed with the exam. Accordingly, along with graduation in June '46, a wedding followed to Elizabeth G. Meigs, a woman of great beauty and infectious energy and love of life. Dad's naval career saw duty at sea with destroyers, a tour running the Naval Exchange in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, and time at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. But Meniere's Disease did not mix with sea duty, and 1954 saw a return to Binghamton as a cadet engineer with NYSEG. Dad worked with the the "Electric Company" twenty years, rising to the position of Assistant Vice President Market Services. A shift to Magnetic Laboratories followed in 1974 where Dad served as a senior executive for the next decade. An avid skier, Dad could teach a new novice to parallel turn in a weekend if the student could stand the pain. A successful private investor, he was able in his time at Magnetic Labs to grow the capital for a comfortable retirement. An autodictat in the area of investing, he often "coached" relatives and friends on investment best practice? An avid conservative, who as a boy in the Depression ran two paper routes to help sustain the family income, he stood ever ready for spirited debate on political or economic issues. Intense, a gifted mathematician, a man of great humor, the most loyal of friends, Dad will be missed. He is survived by his stepson, General Montgomery C. Meigs US Army ret., his daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Meigs, and their two sons William and Matthew and their families. Memorial Services will be held at the US Naval Academy at a time to be announced. Arrangements are with the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home Endicott.
