Obituary of Ruth Adamek
Ruth Helen Coles Adamek
Greene, NY
On April 14, 2019 in the comfort of her home, Ruth transitioned peacefully surrounded by her loving family at age 97. Born December 29, 1921 to George T and Josephine (Alexander) Coles, she grew up in West Corners with 7 siblings on their family farm. After graduating from Union Endicott High School in 1939, she went on to obtain her Bachelors and Masters degrees in teaching at Cortland State. Married October 26, 1946, the newlyweds decided to move to the country where they spent 6 years tenaciously renovating the burnt out shell of an old farmhouse in Glen Aubrey. The now established homestead is where she raised 3 children and started Adamek's blueberry farm, a 162-acre property that included 5 acres of cultivated blueberries. She had a 30+ year career teaching physical education in the UE school district and retired early to care for her husband, John, who predeceased her in 1983.
Playing bridge and competitive tennis (which she did into her early 80's), and traveling the world were passions she continued throughout her life. She LOVED all animals, bird watching, flower gardening, all things blueberry and had an immense appreciation for the beauty of nature. She was always a kind and gentle soul until playing a family game of "Oh Phooey," when she would trump your ace and giggle at your pain. We will forever remember those twinkling blue eyes, mischievous smile, fiercely independent nature and words of advice that always showed the good in every situation.
Her husband John Adamek, her parents and all siblings predeceased her. She is survived by her children John Alan (Susan), Douglas (Kathy), Alecia (Karl Hester) and Shirley Adamek; grandchildren Stephanie (Todd) Annis, Will (Tiara) Adamek, Johnny (Danika) Curley, Rebekah Adamek, Abigail (Jay Lombardo) Adamek, Douglas Jr. (Maggie) Adamek, Liz Adamek, Jahna Adamek Driscoll (Ruben Beardsley), Sherry (Mike) Witmer, Gary (Dee) Cole; 12 "great-grands", many nieces/nephews and special sister-in-law June Adamek.
What a great ride she had, we will all miss her deeply. Family will receive friends from 1-3pm April 20th at Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home: 300 East Main Street Endicott. Memorial contributions may be made to the Every Dog's Dream Adoption or your local Humane Society.
